Places to play chess in central Colchester. The Mercury Theatre Café Bar welcomes chess players and has suitable tables outdoors and some indoors. They have chess sets to borrow or take your own. The space for chess players can vary depending on other activities, so check the times of productions and other activities such as farmers market. Blitz during the interval is probably not advisable; neither is Saturday mornings as it can get very busy (see instead ‘Castle early CHESS‘).
Between the Mercury Theatre and the Roman wall is the Jonathan Penrose Chess Park, public chess tables available whether or not the Mercury is open.
