On Saturday 21 February 2026, the Mayor of Colchester, Cllr. Mike Lilley, welcomed chess players to the Town Hall for a day of fun and fundraising to support the Mayor’s chosen charities.
For seasoned chess players, the day kicked off at 9 am when registration opened for the Colchester Rapidplay 2026. The tournament was planned and organised by the local chess clubs, with thanks to Colchester Junior Chess Club for providing the chess equipment.
Held in the elegant surroundings of the Mayor’s Suite on the first floor, the tournament delivered, to the delight of spectators, six fast‑paced and closely fought rounds. It was won by International Master Peter Large who had travelled from Surrey for the event. Geetha Prodhom from E2-E4 Colchester Chess Club took second place and became the 2026 holder of the Mayor’s Colchester Chess Rapidplay Championship Trophy.
In the Moot Hall, primary school age children began their chess day at 11 am and, after registering with the organisers Chess in Schools and Communities, lost no time in trying out the chess sets for games against friends and family. From noon a tournament was organised for individuals and participating schools. For most, this was their first chess tournament and the enthusiasm was infectious. Parents and supporters were close at hand and some were brave enough to volunteer to play games when needed to even out the numbers.
There were opportunities to chat to other chess parents, play some social chess, and find out about Colchester’s thriving network of local chess clubs and meet‑ups. Representatives of Essex Junior Chess Association and local clubs that welcomed juniors were on hand to offer advice to those wanting to take their chess further.
A highlight of the afternoon was the friendly exhibition game between the Mayor and the local MP Pam Cox, which drew an enthusiastic audience. On this occasion, Town Hall defeated Westminster, but both participants were still smiling.
